Accountability Threats

10 out of 20

Semi-annual discussions are a positive step, but more frequent attention to accountability and anxiety may enhance the board's effectiveness and decision-making processes. The fact that the board does not often address matters related to individual accountability can lead to a lack of clarity regarding responsibilities and potential decision-making biases.

Possible negative effects of this situation on your organization:

Accountability and anxiety management are critical factors in fostering a healthy board culture and ensuring effective governance. Not addressing these topics often enough prevents the board from promoting transparency, improving decision-making, and supporting the overall well-being of its members.

When the board doesn’t provide a supportive environment to address and manage anxiety among board members, it can lead to diminished decision-making capabilities and potentially impair board effectiveness. Also, Insufficient communication channels and transparency hinder effective accountability and exacerbate anxiety among board members and employes.

Recommendations for improvement:

DDevelop and implement clear frameworks for accountability and commensurate authority, including role clarity, clearly defined accountabilities, and reporting structures.

Strengthen governance policies to address accountability gaps, promote transparency, and establish consequences for breaches of accountability.

Provide board members with opportunities for professional development, including training on decision-making under stress, anxiety management, and fostering a culture of accountability.

How we can help:

  • By training your board members, which will allow them to better know the subject and be better equipped to discuss it openly and deal with it.

  • By proposing solutions or mitigation measures appropriate to your situation.
